Papered surface requirements

Attention!

You need to remove the old wallpaper from the walls. The papered surface should be clean, dry, even and moisture absorbent. Any surface absorbing moisture too intensely needs to be treated with primer. If wallpaper with non-woven backing is to be used, the wall surface should be monochrome as this type of wallpaper is half-transparent.

Wallpaper cutting

Before you proceed, make sure the batch number matches on all rolls. The wallpaper pattern and color should be the same in each roll. To determine the right length of the strip, add 5-10 cm to the room height and start cutting.

If the pattern does not require matching, you can cut subsequent strips from the roll. If the pattern needs matching, cut the wallpaper in a way so that neighboring strips form a single pattern. For patterns with shifted design we recommend cutting 2 rolls at once to reduce wastes. (See Figure 1)

Preparing cut wallpaper for hanging

We recommend using a special paste for the heavy vinyl and non-woven base wallpaper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.

For heavy vinyl paper-based wallpaper the paste should be spread on the canvas evenly, making sure it does not get on the wallpaper face. After the paste has been applied, it is advisable to fold the wallpaper strips with the pasted side inside and leave them for 5 minutes to soak. Keep up the same time for all strips.

For non-woven base wallcoverings the paste should be applied to the walls! (See Figure 2)

Wallpaper hanging

The following recommendations will help you achieve the best quality of papered surface:

  • when hanging paper-based wallpaper, first apply paste to the surface;
  • start wallpapering from the windows;
  • when hanging wallpaper with non-woven backing, apply paste to the area of wall or ceiling which is to be papered, and attach dry wallpaper to the wall;
  • the first strip should be hung vertically with the help of a plumb rule. It is recommended to leave an excess length from below and from above to be able to adjust slight height deviations if necessary;
  • hang the next strips edge-to-edge, carefully matching all pattern elements. Afterwards you should smooth the strips by light vertical movements upwards and downwards with a soft brush or roller. Do not stretch the strip while hanging it. We recommend using a roller to fix the joints.

Remove any paste stains with a damp sponge.

Hung wallpaper should dry at room temperature for two or three days, depending on wallpaper type. Draughts and heat emitted by heating devices can deform the joints. (See Figure 3)

Ceiling

The principle of cutting wallpaper for the ceiling is the same as for walls, but the papering process is somewhat more complicated. Therefore, it is recommended that this job is performed by two persons: one person hangs the beginning of the strip while the other supports the remaining part, until the whole strip is hung. Start papering the ceiling from the window, moving into the room.

Window bays

To ensure high-quality papering, leave a strip portion that is as wide as the window bay depth, with allowance. Make cuts from above and from below by window height, fold the protruding part and paste it to the side surface of the bay. Or cut the wallpaper with a sharp knife along the window bay edge. (See Figure 4)

It is recommended to paper doorways in one direction. Otherwise it would be impossible to match wallpaper pattern above the door.

Corners

To paper interior and exterior corners of the room, hang the strip to overlap the previous one by 4-6cm, cutting the upper layer in the middle of the joining strip with a sharp knife. Then remove the cut strip and smooth out the wallpaper so that the joint is not visible. Apply a small amount of paste to the joint when necessary. (See Figure 5)

Radiator

Use a narrow roller with a long handle to make the papering behind the radiator easier. A simpler method of decorating the wall behind a radiator is painting the wall a color corresponding to the wallpaper color. (See Figure 6)

Floor molding/border

Floor molding is glued on the lower part of the wall. Afterwards you can paste wallpaper onto it edge-to-edge. If a border is used, the floor molding and wallpaper in the upper part should also be glued edge-to-edge to the border.

RULES FOR HIGH QUALITY HANGING:

  • Remove the old wallpaper;
  • Prepare the walls for papering;
  • Shut all windows and doors in the room;
  • Turn off all heating devices;
  • Let the wallpaper soak up the paste for 5 minutes (for paper-based wallpaper);
  • Hang the strips edge-to-edge.

Important for paintable wallpaper!

When painting the wallpaper, do not stop in the middle of the wall. If you do so and continue the work on the next day, the border between the areas painted at different times will be visible. If you want to take a break when painting the wallpaper, it is best to reach the wall end, i.e. the room’s corner.

Where there is paste coming out on the joint between two paintable strips, it should be removed with a napkin at once. If the paste soaks in the surface and dries, the paint in this spot will be of a lighter color than on the remaining wallpaper surface.
